Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez call off engagement, announce split

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez officially called off their two-year engagement, saying in a statement Thursday that they “realized we are better as friends.”

“We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects,” Lopez and Rodriguez said in a joint statement to NBC’s “TODAY” show.

“We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.”

Lopez is the mom of twins Max and Emme, 13, whom she shares with ex-husband Marc Anthony. Rodriguez is the dad to two daughters, Ella, 12, and Natasha, 16.

Rumors swirled last month that the singer, 51, and former Yankees baseball player, 45, had called it quits, but they released a statement at the time saying that they were “working through some things.”

“They never officially broke up and had talked about it but are still together. They hit a rough patch that made them think about what they should do,” multiple sources close to the couple had said. “They are sticking together. They are working through things.”

Lopez and Rodriguez started dating in 2017 and announced their engagement in March 2019 while vacationing in the Bahamas. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, they had to postpone their wedding twice.

“We’ve talked about that for sure. I mean, at our age, we’ve both been married before, it’s like, do we get married? Do we not? What does it mean for us?” Lopez told Andy Cohen on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy in December.

“It was really sad because we were supposed to get married in June and we had planned it all,” she added. “So in March or April, we’re looking down the pipe and we’re going, ‘This is maybe not going to happen.’ Italy’s the worst place in the world. And we were going to get married in Italy. It was, yeah, it was like, I was like, ‘OK, we got to cancel everything.'”

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez Break Up After 4 Years Together

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez‘s love story won’t get a happy ending after all.

Multiple sources confirm to E! News that the Hollywood couple has called off their engagement nearly two years after a romantic proposal.

The news comes as a surprise to fans after the pair shared heartfelt Valentine’s Day posts online and also attended the Super Bowl together in Miami this past February.

In fact, Alex expressed hopes that the pair would be getting married in 2021 after postponing their wedding because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“You know we tried twice in 2020. We got bit twice by COVID-19,” the former MLB player shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “You know, they say third time’s a charm, so let’s hope it’s what we want to hear.”

As for Jennifer, she previously told Elle that they weren’t in a rush to say “I do.” As she told the publication, “We postponed the wedding twice. We had planned what we really, really wanted to do, [but] I don’t know if we’ll be able to re-create that. We canceled it, and since then, we haven’t really talked about it.”

Jennifer Lopez will star in Griselda Blanco biopic, ‘The Godmother’

In news that made us wonder whether it was 2016 all over again (when we first reported them) it looks like Jennifer Lopez’s Griselda Blanco biopic is finally back on track. Coming off the heels of her critically acclaimed performance as Ramona in Hustlersit looks like JLo is diving right back into prestige filmmaking. After Second Act and Hustlers, Lopez is partnering again with STXfilms to produce The Godmother and is looking to book Reed Morano, the director best known for setting the tone for Hulu’s Emmy-winning drama The Handmaid’s Tale.

The Godmother follows the story of Griselda Blanco, one of the most infamous drug cartel figures to come out of Colombia. While she may not be as well-known as Pablo Escobar, Hollywood has slowly began to make her as much of a fixture of U.S. pop culture as that other Colombian-born drug kingpin.

Most recently Catherine Zeta Jones portrayed Blanco in a Lifetime project titled after Blanco’s well-known moniker, Cocaine Godmother which was, whitewashing aside, barely able to muster the thrill of those other serialized narco dramas.

Born in Cartagena in 1943, Blanco moved with her mother to Medellín at a young age and quickly earned a reputation for kidnapping, petty theft and even murder before building her Cartel de Medellín-affiliated cocaine empire out of New York and Miami in the 1970s. With echoes of Queen of the South and Narcos, it’s no surprise to find her story is being shopped around for a big-screen adaptation though we wish such stories would start losing their luster given how limited a vision of Latin America (and Colombia, in particular) they create in the U.S. cultural imagination.

“I’ve been fascinated by the life of this corrupt and complicated woman for many years,” said Lopez back in 2016 when the project was first set up at HBO. That fascination has clearly not waned and, after the success of Hustlers and her Superbowl performance, it seems Lopez is finally getting this passion project off the ground. Her acrobatic and super sexy take on Ramona may not have been enough to land her an Oscar nomination but might a gritty transformative take on one of Colombia’s most well-known drug traffickers do the trick? We can’t wait to find out. In the meantime we’ll keep looking forward to her upcoming Maluma co-starring comedy Marry Me.

Watch Jennifer Lopez’s Together at Home Special Performance | POPSUGAR Entertainment

We already know that the vocal chops to light up a stage, but the Hustlers star took her artistry to another level on Saturday, April 18. Lopez made an appearance during the One World: Together at Home special, singing a cover of Barbra Streisand’s “People.” The singer, who is currently self-isolating with fiancé Alex Rodriguez and their children, filmed the performance in her string-light-decorated backyard, perched against a tree.

Though the performance was a more understated and gentle act than we usually expect from the singer, that didn’t make it any less powerful. Lopez clearly connected with the song’s lyrics, which are all about needing one another and not letting pride get in the way of connecting with people. It’s a particularly poignant song considering the special is dedicated to the healthcare workers working on the front lines to fight the COVID-19 outbreak.

Lopez has been on a roll when it comes to making connections between people. The artist recently debuted a show on Quibi, titled Thanks a Million, which shows what happens when celebrities start a chain of gratitude by giving away $100,000. Obviously, she’s more than ready to spread some kindness around the world. Watch Lopez’s touching performance above.

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez’s wedding plans scuppered by coronavirus | HELLO!

Jennifer Lopez got engaged to former MLB player Alex Rodriguez in March 2019 and has confirmed that their wedding plans have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

During an interview as part of Ellen DeGeneres‘ at-home show, J Lo said their big day would probably have happened “any day now” and, when asked if coronavirus had had an impact, she added, “Actually, it did affect it a little bit, so we will see what happens now. Honestly, I really don’t know what’s going to happen now, as far as dates or anything like that. We’re just kind of in a holding pattern like the rest of the world. It’s something that we’ll have to wait and see in a few months, how this all pans out.”

The interview also discussed homeschooling

Previously, the couple have revealed little detail on their nuptials but, between Alex hinting that it would be a “long flight” away, and Jennifer sharing posts of what looked like a wedding spot on a white beach and tagging Alex, fans believed that the pair were planning a destination wedding. It is also likely that 2020 was set to be their year since J Lo was busy filming Hustlers and preparing her Super Bowl performance alongside Shakira in 2019.

Alex proposed to Jennifer in the Caribbean

However long they have to hold off for, it sounds like Jennifer and Alex are happy as long as they are together. At Oprah Winfrey’s 2020 Vision Tour in February, Jennifer said, “Alex is like, ‘Whatever you want to do, we can talk about it.’ I said, ‘But if we’re going to be together for the rest of our lives, what is the rush?’ That’s what we’re really going to do, if we’re really going to be partners.”

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez appeared to use their star power to gain access to a closed gym in Florida before the state’s stay-at-home order goes into effect.

The engaged couple was photographed exiting a gym in Miami on Wednesday afternoon — the same day Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered all residents to stay home beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Friday amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Lopez, 50, and her fiance, who is 44, donned workout gear as they exited the workout facility. Interestingly, the door the pair walked out of had a sign posted to it that read: “The gym is not open to the public. Stay Home. Stay Safe.”

Lopez’s toned body was on full display as she wore a red sports bra and patterned leggings for the outing. She carried a large water bottle with her as Rodgriguez donned an all-black outfit and headphones.

Lopez was greeted by her security guard, who wore a face mask and used wipes to clean off door handles and surfaces before the pair got into their SUV.

Just two weeks ago, Lopez shared a video clip of her son, Max, 12, goofing off at one of her properties while the blended family was in quarantine.

“We can’t go out to any restaurants or anything but the service and entertainment here is pretty good…” Lopez wrote as her son delivered a sparkling water to Rodriguez by means of a hoverboard.

And this week, the “On the Floor” singer shared some motivation for her fans as the pandemic continues to claim the lives of thousands across the globe.

“You need to believe that you can do anything you want to do. We are truly #limitless…the only limits are the ones you put on yourself and create in your mind. #MondayMotivation,” she captioned a video of her appearing on Oprah’s 2020 Vision Tour.
