NBA All-Star Dwyane Wade Says He Fully Backs His 12-Year-Old Son’s ‘Transition’ To a Girl

Former NBA All-Star Dwyane Wade says he’s fully supportive of his 12-year-old son’s “transition” into becoming a girl, telling Ellen DeGeneres on “The Ellen Show” this week, just before his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, posted a video introducing “Zaya” to the world.

“When our child comes home with a question, when our child comes home with an issue, when our child comes home with anything, it’s our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information we can, the best feedback we can,” Wade told DeGeneres. “And that doesn’t change because sexuality is now involved.”

On Tuesday, Union posted a video to social media introducing “Zaya,” who was born Zion.

“Meet Zaya,” Union posted along with the clip. “She’s compassionate, loving, whip smart and we are so proud of her. It’s Ok to listen to, love & respect your children exactly as they are. Love and light good people.”

“What’s the point of even being on this earth if you’re going to try to be someone you’re not?” the newly-renamed Zaya said in the video. “It’s like you are not even living as yourself, which is the dumbest concept to me. Be true, and don’t really care what the ‘stereotypical’ way of being you is.”

Zion-turned-Zaya joins a slew of other celebrity-born kids who’ve decided (or, in many cases, had it decided for them) to “transition” to the opposite gender. Other notables include Charlize Theron’s 7-year-old biological son Jackson, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s daughter Shiloh (now “John”), Cynthia Nixon’s “son” Samuel, Warren Beatty’s biological daughter Stephen, and Cher’s daughter “Chastity,” now a transgender man named “Chaz.”

Dwyane Wade Says He Supports His 12-Year-Old Identifying As Female

Retired NBA star Dwyane Wade and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, consider themselves allies to the LGBTQ+ community. Wade opened up on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” about their experiences with their 12-year-old child, Zaya.

Wade said that he and Union are “proud … parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community — and we’re proud allies as well,” during a recent appearance on Ellen.

“We take our roles and our responsibility as parents very seriously,” he explained. “When a child comes home with a question, when a child comes home with an issue, when a child comes home with anything, it’s our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information that we can, the best feedback that we can — and that doesn’t change because sexuality’s now involved in it.”

The former basketball player spoke about the day Zion, came home and said that he would like to be addressed using the pronouns she/her and be called Zaya.

“Once Zaya, our 12-year-old, came home — first Zion, I don’t know if everybody knows, originally named Zion, born as a boy — came home and said, ‘Hey, so I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward I am ready to live my truth, and I want to be referenced as ‘she’ and ‘her.’ I would love for you guys to call me Zaya,’” Wade said.

After speaking with Zaya, Wade and Union wanted to get as much education and information as they could, he said. “So internally, now it’s our job to one, go out and get information, to reach out to every relationship that we have,” he added.

“My wife reached out to everybody on the cast of ‘Pose’,” he continued. “We’re just trying to figure out as much information as we can to make sure that we give our child the best opportunities to be her best self.”

Dwyane Wade Wants to Give His 12-Year-Old Child Zaya ‘the Best Opportunity to Be Her Best Self’

Dwyane Wade is a proud parent.

During Tuesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the basketball star recalled the moment his 12-year-old came out to him and wife Gabrielle Union, and also said that he hopes to give her “the best opportunity to be her best self.”

“First of all, I think it’s what every parent should be is what you’re being right now,” DeGeneres told him. “Which is unconditionally loving your child and supporting your child in whoever they are.”

“Me and my wife Gabrielle Union are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community,” Wade, 38, said. “And we are proud allies as well. We take our roles and our responsibility as parents very seriously. So when our child comes home with a question, when a child comes home with an issue, when a child comes home with anything, it’s our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information that we can, to give them the best feedback that we can — and that doesn’t change because sexuality is now involved in it.”

The athlete continued, revealing that his child had decided to go by the new name of Zaya, and be referred to by she/her pronouns.

“So once Zaya, our 12-year-old, came home — first Zion, I don’t know if everyone knows, originally named Zion, born as a boy — came home and said, ‘Hey, I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward I’m ready to live my truth. I want to be referenced as she and her, I would love for you guys to call me Zaya,’ ” Wade shared.

Wade — who is also dad to Kaavia James, 15 months, Xavier Zechariah, 6, and Zaire Blessing Dwyane, 18, as well as the guardian of nephew Dahveon Morris, 18 — also shared that he was proud of Zaya and her role as “a leader.”

“Once Zaya came home and said, ‘I want you to call me Zaya and I’m ready to take on this,’ I looked at her and said, ‘You are a leader. And this is our opportunity to allow you to be a voice,’ ” Wade added to DeGeneres. “Right now it’s through us, because she’s 12 years old, but eventually it will be through her.”
