New York Times film critic Lena Wilson has called out actress Amandla Stenberg on social media.
Lena revealed she received a direct message on her Instagram from Amandla about the review she did for the film Bodies Bodies Bodies.
Amandla, who came out as gay in 2018, had taken offense for Lena’s copy that referred to cleavage, however the actress did call her NYT review ‘great.’
Lena’s review referring to the cleavage was one sentence, which read: ‘The only thing that really sets Bodies Bodies apart is its place in the A24 hype machine, where it doubles as a 95-minute advertisement for cleavage and Charli XCX’s latest single.’
Speaking out: New York Times film critic Lena Wilson has called out actress Amandla Stenberg on Twitter. Lena revealed she received a direct message on her Instagram from Amandla about the review she did for the film Bodies, Bodies Bodies Bodies
In 2018, Amandla said to Wonderland Magazine: ‘I was so overcome with this profound sense of relief when I realized that I’m gay. Not bi, not pan[sexual] but gay – with a romantic love for women. All of these things that felt so internally contrary to my truest self were rectified as I unraveled a long web of denial and self-deprivation.’
Lena, who is a lesbian, also tweeted: ‘Always weird when the homophobia is coming from inside the house but this is something,’ referring to the fact that they are both part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Lena pointed out that Amandla appeared to only zero in on her and not any other film critic.
Lena shared the DM from Amandla on her Twitter and TikTok.
In the DM, Amandla wrote: ‘Ur review was great, maybe if you had gotten ur eyes off my t**s you could’ve watched the movie!’

What was said: Lena shared the DM from Amandla on her Twitter and TikTok
Lena responded back to Amandla: ‘hey, Amandla! generally a big fan of your work, but this sure is something. really wishing you well in your career and life. have a nice night.’
The film critic then blocked the star on Instagram, as seen in the DM screenshot.
Lena also tweeted: ‘Do you think she Instagram DM’d Alison Willmore, Justin Chang and Anthony Lane like this or,’ adding the DM screenshot.
She also tweeted: ‘Always weird when the homophobia is coming from inside the house but this is something.’
From Twitter: She also tweeted about the message as well, noting that she only seemed to received a message about her review
Lena wrote another tweet: ‘me: (spends one line of a 500-word review facetiously commenting on how A24 objectifies young women to sell content). Random men on twitter dot com and also, apparently, Amandla Stenberg: Local d**e Cannot Stop Talking About Boobies.’
A24 is the distributor of the film.
She also took to TikTok and shared a video: ‘I haven’t been on here in a while but I was just checking my Instagram DMs because a really lovely kind person informed me that Jennifer’s Body is playing in 35mm at the Roxy this weekend. If you’re in New York you have to absolutely go to that. There are a disgusting amount of tickets left.’
Words: She also took to TikTok and shared a vide
‘I looked at my DM request and found this which I’m going to let speak for itself for a little bit. For context I have reviewed Bodies Bodies Bodies for the New York Times and I really didn’t like and I said so. Ironically I praised the acting though.’
‘I don’t want anything else to come from this, I’m devastated to have received this message in the first place. I was a genuine huge fan of hers but I’m posting it because I don’t want this person who has more social power than me to think that it’s f****n okay to do something like this. And that’s all.’
She captioned the TikTok: ‘Unfathomably weird to get “I don’t want you in the locker room while I’m changing” bullying from a whole other lesbian.’
