Jodie Turner-Smith reflects on being the first black actress to be cast as Anne Boleyn

Jodie Turner-Smith has reflected on being the first black actress to be cast as Anne Boleyn in Channel 5’s forthcoming three-part drama.

Speaking to Radio Times on Tuesday, The Queen and Slim star, 34, admitted that she knew it might be ‘a stretch’ for some viewers to see her as the doomed second wife of Henry VIII, but said she was sure others were ‘finally ready’ to see her in the role.

Jodie is the first black actress to portray Anne, and she follows in the footsteps of Natalie Dormer, Claire Foy and Natalie Portman by playing the historic part.

‘I am aware it’s going to be a stretch for some people’: Jodie Turner-Smith reflected on being the first black actress to be cast as Anne Boleyn in a new interview on Tuesday

Reflecting on this, Jodie told the publication: ‘It’s much more approachable and appealing to a contemporary audience when you cast this way because we are distilling this down to a human experience.

‘If you ask anyone to watch a film or to observe any art, you are asking them to suspend their beliefs.

‘I am aware it’s going to be a stretch for some people because they will feel too distracted by that, but I think for a lot of other people who are finally ready to see the world in a different way, they’re going to see that this is a human story we are telling, and a fascinating one at that.’

Thoughts: Jodie said while some viewers might find it hard to see her as the doomed second wife of Henry VIII (pictured), she was sure others were ‘finally ready’ to see her in the role

Jodie went on to discuss how Anne was executed after King Henry began to hate how independent and intelligent she was.

‘Before I met my husband [The Affair star Joshua Jackson], some of the men I dated would love what they saw but the minute we got together, the thing they loved was the very thing they wanted to stamp out.

‘I think that’s the mark of any powerful woman: the male ego can be quite fragile. They love how outspoken you are and suddenly it’s, “You’re speaking too much.”‘

Jodie welcomed her daughter Janie in April 2020, and she explained how motherhood has changed the way she sees other women and their experiences.

Candid: Jodie said, ‘For a lot of other people who are finally ready to see the world in a different way, they’re going to see that this is a human story we are telling’

Of her character, she said: ‘Anne, like all women at the time, was trying to navigate the patriarchy as a mother and a woman and that’s what makes this story so powerful and interesting; it felt relatable and modern.’

Anne Boleyn will explore the final months of Anne Boleyn’s life from the eponymous Queen’s perspective, as she struggles to secure a future for her daughter and to challenge the powerful patriarchy closing in around her.

The three-part series will depict the key moments that cause Anne to topple, unpicking her immense strength, her fatal vulnerabilities and her determination to be an equal among men.

The cast also includes I May Destroy You’s Paapa Essiedu, who will portray the role of Anne’s brother and Tudor nobleman George.

Background: The series explores the final moments of the queen’s life from her lens before she is executed by her husband

Dating Amber actress Lola is featured as Anne’s love rival, Jane Seymour, who succeeded her as the Queen of England.

Jamael Westman, Amanda Burton and Thalissa Teixeira also play roles in the mini-series – which finished production on location in Yorkshire in December 2020.

Penned by writer Eve Hedderwick Turner and directed by Lynsey Miller, Anne Boleyn aims to ‘challenge all the conventions of who we think Anne Boleyn was and shines a feminist light on her story.’

Challenging conventions: The three-part series will depict the key moments that cause Anne to topple, unpicking her immense strength and her determination to be an equal among men

Fable Pictures added: ‘We’re absolutely thrilled to have the magnetic Jodie Turner-Smith on board to encapsulate Anne’s determination to be an equal among men and to pave a path for her daughter.

‘We feel that history has side-lined the voice of this ambitious Queen in favour of the men who brought her down, and that Lynsey Miller’s beautiful, intimate vision will put Anne’s gaze at the heart of the piece.’

Ben Frow, director of programs at ViacomCBS, added: ‘This project re-frames her story as a propulsive psychological thriller, told from a new perspective, with top talent like Jodie Turner-Smith attached.

Queen: Back in 2007, Natalie Dormer took on the role of Anne Boleyn alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyer’s Henry VIII in BBC series, The Tudors

All the stars: Natalie Portman took on the role of the Queen for The Other Boleyn Girl in 2008, while Claire Foy played her for the BBC’s ÂŁ7 million series Wolf Hall in 2009

‘It was simply too irresistible to say no to and I’m very excited to see the finished product.’

Director Miller previously defended the decision to give the role to a black actress, after sparking accusations of ‘blackwashing’.

The TV executive said: ‘I feel very strongly that we have the best actress for the role so I am happy to stand by it. I’m very proud of what we have created together, so let them talk.

Brad Pitt scores huge victory in war with Angelina Jolie after judge awards joint custody of kids

Brad Pitt was granted joint custody of his children with Angelina Jolie following a lengthy court battle.

The 57-year-old actor has been fighting in the court system for nearly five years to obtain equal rights to the six kids he shares with his ex-wife.

A source told DailyMail.com: ‘He’s so relieved. His only intention is to spend more time with the kids.’

Jolie and Pitt are parents to six kids, five of them minors: Maddox, 19, Pax, 17, Zahara, 16, Shiloh, 14 and twins Vivienne and Knox, 12.

After months of testimony from witnesses and child services professionals who interviewed their children, Judge John Ouderkirk reportedly made his thoughts clear on the ruling, according to Page Six.

‘There was a significant change made in the custody agreements based on an extremely detailed decision made by the judge,’ a source said.

‘Brad was just trying to have more time with his kids — and it has been clear that Angie has done everything possible to prevent this.’

The insider added: ‘This trial lasted for several months and there were a f**k ton of witnesses, experts, therapists and other people who have been with the kids and around them, and the decision was based on this.’

Big family: The 57-year-old actor has been fighting in the court system for nearly five years to obtain equal rights to the six kids he shares with his ex-wife; seen in 2014

The 45-year-old actress will reportedly continue her legal fight and said the judge’s ruling was more of a ‘tentative decision.’

‘Joint custody is not the issue that Angelina objects to, there were other issues of concern, but the court proceedings are closed and sealed,’ the source said.

Lost love: Brad and Angelina met while working on set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2004 and were married in 2014; pictured in 2009

The source added: ‘There was a safety order surrounding the previous custody arrangements, that is public, and the kids schedule has been set under the jurisdiction of the division of family services for over three years.’

Angelina attempted to dismiss the private judge they had hired to rule over the case in documents submitted to California’s Second District Court of Appeals on Monday.

Jolie’s lawyers argued the judge ‘has failed to adequately consider … input as to their experiences, needs, or wishes,’ which is in violation of a state legal code that allows minors 14 to 17 to testify.

The Oscar-winner’s legal team told the appellate court that the judge has neglected to let her submit to the court evidence that speaks to the safety and well-being of the minors, which is ‘evidence critical to making her case.’

Pitt’s legal team fired back, saying that the presiding judge ‘has conducted an extensive proceeding over the past six months in a thorough, fair manner and reached a tentative ruling and order after hearing from experts and percipient witnesses.’

Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 — citing the ‘the health of the family’ — in the wake of a conflict on a private flight from France to Los Angeles in which she accused Pitt of behaving abusively to son Maddox, who was 15 at the time.

Brad faced no charges in connection with the incident amid probes from the FBI and social services.

Angelina and Brad met while working on set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2004 while he was married to Jennifer Aniston.

Both actors claimed their was no infidelity despite falling in love while working together, and Aniston filed for divorce in March 2005 after five years of marriage.

Fighting on: The 45-year-old actress will reportedly continue her legal fight and said the judge’s ruling was more of a ‘tentative decision’ (pictured in 2019)

Alec Baldwin rips cancel culture: ‘Like a forest fire in constant need of fuel’

Alec Baldwin has once again bashed cancel culture, this time comparing it to the devastation of a “forest fire.”

“Cancel culture is like a forest fire in constant need of fuel. Functioning objectively. No prejudice. No code. Just destroy. The deserving and the undeserving alike,” the 63-year-old actor tweeted Friday.

Baldwin’s take was written just one day after he slammed U.S. Congress.

“There appears to be a zero tolerance policy for bad behavior everywhere except where it matters most: the US Congress,” he wrote on the social media platform.

Back in March, the father of six made headlines for seemingly defending Woody Allen and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo while railing against cancel culture.

The actor initially released a 14-minute video on his Instagram in which he covered the topic more at length before deleting it and replacing it with a significantly shorter video that takes on cancel culture in less-specific terms.

“I think my last message went on too long. What I was saying is that I think that the cancel culture is getting out of hand,” Baldwin said. “There are people that deserve to be punished for what they have done but not everybody should be punished in the same way… Not everybody should be punished in the same way. Even the criminal justice system recognizes that.”

He went on to claim that cancel culture “is creating more problems than it solves.”

In late 2020, the Baldwin family became subject to its own cancellation after the actor’s wife, Hilaria Baldwin, 37, was caught in the center of a viral controversy over claims that she lied about her Spanish heritage.

Jodie Turner-Smith says Meghan Markle ‘could have modernised the royal family’

Jodie Turner-Smith has revealed she feels Meghan Markle ‘could have modernised the royal family’ and said the monarchy is ‘limiting’ and ‘archaic’.

The British actress, 34, who is the first black woman to take on the role of Anne Boleyn in the new Channel 5 series, said she is not a ‘monarchist’ in a new interview.

Speaking about Meghan in an interview published in The Telegraph, Jodie said: ‘It was a terrible missed opportunity, the way in which it was not allowed to be something that really modernises that institution, and to change it to something for the better. I think that’s why there’s dysfunction there.’

Meanwhile the actress also revealed she ‘understood’ the choice to cast her as Henry VIII’s wife was ‘polarising’, saying: ‘It was an opportunity for me to bring my individual identity to this and distil it down to a human story, as opposed to a story that’s about whiteness or class

Jodie Turner-Smith, 34, who is set to play Anne Boleyn in a new drama series coming out this month, has revealed she feels Meghan Markle ‘could have modernised the royal family’

Speaking about the monarchy, she said: ‘We have to look at things in a modern context. And only then we will recognise that certain things are archaic, and don’t really serve us as a community and are limiting us.

‘I think we should keep those things in stories and move on to something else in reality.’

Meanwhile she said the backlash she received when it was announced that she would the first actress of colour to play the character of King Henry VIII’s second wife, was ‘to be expected’ because people are ‘attached’ to the way Anne Boleyn looks in their imagination.

The mother-of-one revealed that she thinks Anne was ‘deeply feminist’ and ‘ahead of her time’ as she argued for women to have a voice in relation to politics and religion.

Backlash: Jodie said the reaction she received to the news she would play Anne Boleyn was ‘to be expected’ because people are ‘attached’ to the way King Henry VIII’s second wife looks in their imagination

In the official full-length trailer for the Channel 5 series released on Friday, Jodie is seen trying and prove her innocence after being accused of high treason but ultimately prepare to be beheaded.

The intense clip opens with Thomas Cromwell, played by Barry Ward, informing Anne she is being charged with treason, to which she immediately pleads not guilty.

It then shows her in childbirth, desperately asking if her child was ‘a boy’ before she is seen arguing with King Henry VIII, played by Mark Stanley, yelling: ‘You promised me sons.’

Another character is heard asking Anne if her husband no longer visits her chamber, and King Henry is seen giving Jane Seymour, played by Lola Petticrew, an affectionate look as he and Anne attend a party.

Shortly after it appears she was accused of treason as she’s seen telling another character: ‘The world will know my innocence.’

Anne is shown walking serenely in a number of locations before finally stepping up to the chopping block.

As the dramatic scenes unfurl, a character is heard telling Anne: ‘Fear can be fuel, let your fear drive you to be bigger, louder, the sky itself will not limit you.’

“After a year and a half we realised we may need some help. We made an appointment with our doctor to start the IVF process about two years ago.

“We were told all the worst news, given worst case scenarios but you just have to keep going and trying everything you can.

“Getting your body and your head in the best physical health is the most important thing… if it’s something you really want you’ve just got to throw everything at it.”

Grammys end ‘secret’ nomination committees after criticism from The Weeknd

The organisers of the Grammy Awards have announced that they are ending the “secret” committees responsible for its nomination process.

The Recording Academy had faced criticism from artists including previous Grammy-winner The Weeknd, who stated in March that he would be boycotting the ceremony “because of the secret committees”.

Other artists including Beyoncé, Solange, Kanye West, and Frank Ocean have skipped or criticised the awards body in recent years for failing to honour artists of colour.

On Friday (30 April), the Recording Academy announced that nominations for next year’s major awards would be selected by its full voting body, totalling more than 11,000 members. Previously, nominees in certain categories (including Album, Song, Record of the Year and Best New Artist) had been approved by committees of 15-30 unnamed industry experts.

Nominating committees remain for some of the “craft” categories (such as Liner Notes and Producer), where the process has been the subject of less controversy in the past.

Additionally, 90% of the general Academy electorate will undertake a requalification process this year “to ensure the voting body is actively engaged in music creation”.

In a statement, the Academy said the changes were made “to ensure that the Grammy Awards rules and guidelines are transparent and equitable”.

The Weeknd’s 2020 album After Hours was one of the most successful records of the year, but was not nominated for any awards at this year’s Grammys.

Writing on Twitter last November, the Canadian pop star claimed: “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency.”
