Are Cash-Strapped Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Nearing a ‘Breaking Point’?

Meghan Markle’s Hollywood dreams could be fading fast. New reports suggest that she and Prince Harry are rapidly running out of money. And the strain on their finances is reportedly straining their relationship.

Meghan Markle’ Orders’ Prince Harry to Save Them Both

According to UK news outlet Express, a “royal insider” claimed things are getting testy between the former royals. Express says Meghan has “ordered” Prince Harry to get a job. The insider explains:

Meghan is terrified that her dreams of being a Hollywood queen will be destroyed by this financial nightmare and she is insisting that Harry make a move and resolve the crisis.

That sounds like a job for a prince. Unfortunately, Harry is no longer an actual prince. The insider continues:

The big problem is that Harry has no marketable skills, has never had a real job…

He does not have a university degree nor does he know a second language. He only has military training.

Prince Harry has to be feeling a bit neutered. After all, this isn’t the first time Meghan has bossed him around.

What Did You Expect When You Left the Royal Family?

What, exactly, is the “crisis” that Meghan Markle wants him to solve? It seems to be the one she caused when she convinced his man to leave his royal family. Surely, there would be no money issues if these two still lived in the UK.

But since she convinced Prince Harry to leave, he’s now closer to just an average person. He doesn’t have the power he had when she married him. Donald Trump made that abundantly clear when he triumphantly denied the couple access to American-funded protection.

It’s like she fell in love with Superman and then immediately dressed him in kryptonite. He’s powerless now. Sure, he might be able to create something out of thin air based on his name alone, but it’s going to be much harder in this new economy.

Meghan Markle & Harry’s Relationship Is Starting to Get Rocky

The insider described their newly forming relationship issues:

Harry has given up on real life for his rebellious American wife, but his sacrifice is exploding in his face.

Their marriage is tense, they could be at a breaking point.

This comes after news that Harry ‘snapped’ when he decided to move to Canada with Meghan. He’s had mixed feelings about being stuck in a house with her. And now, they’ve already moved to LA.

Meghan Markle is risking a lot to get her time in the spotlight. Her relationship is apparently on the rocks. Her man left his family. Maybe this global pandemic slows down, and they get back on track. But it seems like she’ll stop at nothing until she becomes relevant in Hollywood. Hopefully, it’s worth it.

Paris Hilton voted the most hated American on Spain’s Costa del Sol – Euro Weekly News Spain USA News Article

Paris Hilton takes a hammering in recent poll on Spain’s Costa Del Sol as she’s voted the most hated American

As the Costa del Sol sits on lockdown and confined to homes for now 15 days, residents on social media are passing time by asking friends and followers all sorts of questions to answer and share.

Amy Beaton from Torreblanca asked the question, reply with your most hated American expecting the poll topper to come back as President Donald Trump but was shocked after 48 hours of answers that it was actually Paris Hilton.

Paris Hilton for those of you who don’t know is the daughter and heiress of the Hilton hotel chain which was founded by her great grandfather, at present she resides in Los Angeles and milks the celebrity status as she struts around high celebrity parties ensuring she gets her face in the press.

Her most famous headlines were when a home made sex video was leaked in 2003 and was shared on the internet as it went viral around the world, although many still remain of though that it wasn’t leaked at all and she did it for publicity and more self seeking fame.

Anyway it seems despite her success in the United States Of America, she’s deemed by Amy Beaton’s poll to be the most despised and hated woman on Spain’s Costa del Sol.

Amy told the Euro Weekly News: “I only started the poll for a little light relief and it went out to about 5,000 expats here on the coast, I was expecting it to come back as outright winner Donald Trump, but I was amazed when it came back Paris Hilton, personally I don’t take much notice of her, I hardly know who she is, but I never expected her to be the most hated”

One voter Stephanie Booth told us “I voted for her as I can’t stand her, let’s be honest she hasn’t actually done anything in her life has she? apart from be born with a silver spoon in her mouth, she struts round as she owns the world and can’t keep her face out the press”

“She’s a publicity seeking b^tch, I can’t even look at her face, she makes me so angry, if you are born into money like that, have some class hey!”

Amy’s poll certainly has caused a stir on the Costa del Sol during lockdown, oh and Donald Trump came in third behind OJ Simpson.

Lizzo Responds to Blueface Shooting His Shot | The Source

In an interview with 92.3 LA, Blueface had some interesting comments in regards to three-time Grammy award winner, Lizzo.  The rapper posted the video on his Instagram account with the caption, “They ask da questions I just answer them.”

In the video, one of the radio hosts on the show asked Blueface, “Lizzo has the coronavirus, are you still in?” Even though the rapper wore a medical mask, it didn’t stop fans from hearing his answer. “I done hit a couple big bitches in my day, you feel me?” he stated. Before giving a big grin the rapper made another remark, “Lizzo, if you out there and you hearin’ this. Call me, baby. Call me.” Despite being asked questions previously about Meg The Stallion and Rihanna, the rapper only posted the video of him answering the questions regarding Lizzo on his Instagram account with the caption, “They ask da questions I just answer them.”

The hosts on the show told Blueface that they believe that the singer would call after seeing his video. It’s safe to say Lizzo has seen the message and has responded, but not with the phonecall that the hosts believed Blueface would receive. Instead, the singer posted a sultry photo on Instagram with the caption, “Blueface Babyyy.” Could the celebrities just be flirting? Or is there potential for a hook up here?

Brittney Taylor Involved In A Minor Scuffle After Having A Little Too Much To Drink! – The Shade Room

As many people continue to practice social distancing around this time, some people are still holding small gatherings and keeping them under the 10 person limit, as instructed by officials.

Sunday night, former Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta star Tommie Lee had a few friends over for some Sunday dinner. However, things took an unexpected turn after some of the guests had a little too much to drink. Also in attendance at Tommie’s place for dinner was current “Love & Hip Hop: Miami” star Bobby Lytes, former “Love & Hip Hop: New York” star Britney Taylor, and also another friend.

Everyone was seen on social media having a good time with each other, however, things started to take a turn when Tommie said she came out of the restroom to see Britney and the other friend get into a scuffle.

In the video, it is mentioned that both ladies had too much to drink and that ultimately led to the incident. However, we were reassured that there is no real issue between the two women, and it was just a random incident that can pretty much be blamed on alcohol.

Check it out below:

A post shared by The Shade Room (@theshaderoom) on

Brittney later took to social media to address the situation and said, “My ‘friend’ and I was drunk off Henny shots and playing. We were throwing water n each other and then she literally went crazy. Idk where all the anger came from. But she completely lost it on me out of nowhere. I had it was even a ‘real fight’ that’s why I wasn’t fighting back.”

A post shared by BRI ?? (@brittneyftaylor) on

As you all may remember, last year Brittney Taylor made headlines after she accused her former “Love & Hip Hop: New York” co-star Remy Ma of assaulting her. Charges in the case were later dropped after prosecutors on the case explained that they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she had committed a crime.

“Hobbs & Shaw” Sequel In Development – Dark Horizons

Following its $760 million worldwide box-office haul, the Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham-led “Fast and Furious” franchise spin-off “Hobbs & Shaw” is getting its inevitable sequel.

In an Instagram Live Q&A, Johnson confirmed that another installment is looking to be added to his already busy upcoming schedule: “We are developing now the next film, the next [Hobbs & Shaw] movie, and I’m pretty excited about it…Just gotta figure out the creative right now, and the direction we’re going to go.”

Reviews for the first film were fairly good. No word if his co-stars like Jason Statham and Vanessa Kirby or director David Leitch and screenwriter Chris Morgan will be back, though it’s likely.

One thread likely to be picked up is the identity of the Eteon corporation head and boss of the first film’s villain Brixton (Idris Elba). Only heard as an altered voice, Leitch and Morgan both reportedly want Keanu Reeves for the part and should Reeves’ schedule have a gap – he could well do it.

Dragon’s Lair Is Getting a Netflix Movie, Possibly Featuring Ryan Reynolds | Tor.com

Good news for everyone who spent their tween and teen years playing Dragon’s Lair in the ’80s: The Hollywood Reporter writes that the classic arcade game is getting a live-action movie adaptation, courtesy of Netflix. But that’s not all—according to the publication, Ryan Reynolds is in talks to star and produce.

Buy it Now

There’s no word on what role the actor might play in the adaptation, but based on the characters in the 1983 game, we can probably make an educated guess. Created by Rick Dyer and Don Bluth (who also did the animation), Dragon’s Lair has you playing as a knight named Dirk the Daring, tasked with saving the Princess Daphne, who’s been trapped by the dragon Singe in the wizard Mordroc’s castle. While it’s unknown at this time how closely Netflix will stick to the game’s storyline and premise, our money’s on Reynolds being a contender for the role of Dirk.

This isn’t the first Dragon’s Lair adaptation. Back in the ’80s, ABC aired a half-hour animated show based on the game, and multiple attempts have been made to do a live-action adaptation since then. Back in 2015, Bluth and frequent collaborator Gary Goldman made a Kickstarter for an animated prequel film, but the project has since been canceled.

Netflix’s Dragon’s Lair will be produced by Bluth, Goldman, Roy Lee, Trevor Engelson, and Jon Pomeroy, according to THR, while Dan and Kevin Hageman (The Lego Movie; Scary Movies to Tell in the Dark) will write the script. Netflix has yet to announce a release date

*Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have reportedly left Canada and settled in the Los Angeles area.

The couple had been living on Canada’s Vancouver Island following their announcement to step back as senior members of the royal family.

Markle was born and raised in Los Angeles, where her mother, Doria Ragland, also lives, and there’s speculation the former “Suits” star might reignite her acting career.

News of their move to LA comes as Disney drops a teaser of the upcoming “Elephant” documentary, which Meghan voices as narrator.

The documentary feature follows a family of African elephants on a 1,000-mile (1,600-kilometer) journey across the Kalahari Desert, Entertainment Tonight reports.

Markle reportedly agreed to participate in the film if Disneynature and the Disney Conservation Fund made a donation to Elephants Without Borders, an organization working in Botswana dedicated to conserving wildlife and natural resources

“Elephant” will debut April 3 on the Disney+ streaming service.

OTHER NEWS YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED: Oprah Interviews Idris Elba & Wife About Their Coronavirus Diagnoses – WATCH

In related news, Prince Harry’s dad, Prince Charles, 71, was diagnosed with coronavirus earlier this week.

The future king of England is showing “mild symptoms” but is said to be in “good health,” according to a statement from Clarence House.

His wife, Camilla, 72, has tested negative for the novel coronavirus but has joined him in isolation at their home in Scotland.

“Her Majesty The Queen remains in good health,” the statement read. “The Queen last saw The Prince of Wales briefly on the morning of 12th March and is following all the appropriate advice with regard to her welfare.”

Meanwhile, Meghan is reportedly forbidding Harry from visiting the UK to see his father amid the COVID-19 crisis.

“Under no circumstances is she OK with him traveling anywhere right now,” according to an insider who spoke to the Daily Mail.

The pandemic has reportedly brought Harry and his brother Prince William closer, and he also has regular contact with his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II.

“Harry has made it very clear to them that he will do whatever he can to help from Canada,” a source told the outlet.

President Trump Says Prince Harry, Meghan Markle Must Pay for Security – Variety

President Trump Says Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Must Pay for Own Security

After moving to the U.S. and leaving the royal family behind, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle must now pay for their own security team, according to President Trump.

Before recently relocating to the U.S., the couple had been living in Canada under the watch and protection of British security and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The price of their security team was estimated to cost millions of dollars per year, but who is footing the bill in America is still up in the air.

However, Trump made it clear on Sunday that the U.S. will not provide any federal protection and the former Duke and Duchess of Sussex must pay on their own.

“I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen & the United Kingdom. It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada. Now they have left Canada for the U.S., however, the U.S. will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!” he tweeted.

She’s already booked a narrating role for the Disneynature documentary “Elephant,” set to debut on Disney Plus on April 3. The project marks her first role since officially stepping away from the royal family duties.

Looking serene, Storm captioned the snap: ‘A beautiful calm birth thanks to Claire Mellon and all the wonderful team at @theportlandhosp Thank you so much for taking such great care of us ♥️ Coco Knox Keating, born 27.03.20 #myheartcouldburst #ourlittlegirl’

Happy news: Storm Keating and her singer husband Ronan have welcomed their second child – a daughter called Coco Knox

Ronan also posted the snap, captioning his: ‘Hello world. Spreading some good cheer at this time with the announcement of the safe delivery of our little girl Coco Knox Keating. Calmly arrived on 27/3/20. Mama & Baba are rocking #HappyTimes #KeatingClan #BabyKeating’

The couple announced they were expecting their second child together back in November.

And just two weeks ago Storm, 38, was seen showing off her growing baby bump as she celebrated her husband Ronan’s 43rd birthday with a party at 100 Wardour St in Soho.

And baby makes four: The pair are already parents to son Cooper, two, with Ronan posting a snap of the trio taking a walk in the sunshine just three days before they welcomed Coco

Bumping along nicely: Storm showed off her growing baby bump in a black top and leggings as she celebrated husband Ronan’s birthday in London earlier this month

The pair are already parents to son Cooper, two, with Ronan posting a snap of the trio taking a walk in the sunshine just three days before they welcomed Coco.

He captioned this: ‘Can’t believe this incredible woman. A force to be reckoned with – hours from our little girl arrives in this world and she is chasing Coops around the garden. Even in our strange circumstances she is keeping the normal and focusing on what’s real ❤️ [sic]’

The family have of course welcomed their child amid the current coronavirus pandemic, and will have been self-isolating in the past few weeks – with Ronan performing virtual gigs online for fans to keep morale high.

Storm shared the news last year, posting: ‘Another little Keating on the way’

Storm shared a photo of Cooper kissing his mother’s growing bump when they announced the news at the end of last year.

She captioned the post: ‘Another little Keating on the way.’

Irish musician Ronan shared the ‘super exciting’ news during an interview with OK! magazine, alongside Australian designer Storm, who joked that her husband will now need to get a vasectomy, as he’s set to become a father of five.

Speaking to the publication, Ronan said: ‘Yes, we’re having a baby girl! It’s super exciting. We are very lucky and I am so happy for Storm.’

Trying times: The family have of course welcomed their child amid the current coronavirus pandemic, and will have been self-isolating in the past few weeks – with Ronan performing virtual gigs online for fans to keep morale high

Storm added: ‘I’ve always wanted at least one of each sex so I’m feeling very blessed. That’s five kids in total now, so that’s enough, we’re going to have to get Ro to have the snip.’

Boyzone star Ronan has son Jack, 20, and daughters Missy, 18, and Ali, 14, from his marriage ex-wife Yvonne Connolly. He also has two-year-old son Cooper with Storm.

On welcoming a baby girl into their home, Ronan said: ‘People say that girls can be trickier. With Cooper being such a dream we’re scared we can’t get that lucky twice.’

But Storm, who has already picked out a ‘non-traditional’ name for the baby, has insisted that ‘even if [the baby] is a little terror’, she is ‘chuffed’ to be having a girl.

Thomas Markle claims Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should support the Queen | Daily Mail Online

The Duchess of Sussex‘s father has once again spoken out against his daughter, claiming she should return to England to support the royal family amid the coronavirus outbreak.

American lighting director Thomas Markle, 75, has not spoken to Meghan Markle, 38, since he missed her wedding after he was exposed for selling paparazzi pictures, before giving a stream of cruel interviews about his daughter.

And now he has insisted that Prince Harry, 35, Meghan and 10-month-old Archie should return from their rumoured Malibu abode, to support the Queen and the rest of the royal family, who are currently in self isolation.

Last year it emerged Meghan had reached out to her father and begged him to patch things up privately.

The Duchess of Sussex’s father has once again spoken out against his daughter, claiming she should return to England to support the royal family amid the coronavirus outbreak (seen together when Meghan was a child)

Speaking to the Mirror, he said: ‘I think Meghan and Harry should go back to the Royal family in the UK and be supportive of the Queen.

‘I think they should be in England at this time and not in LA.’

‘They can join the A-list and make lots of money, of course, when the problem with the virus is over.’

Despite giving the interview, Thomas then went on to plead with Harry and Meghan to get in contact with him, revealing he is in the ‘high risk’ category due to his age and health issues amid the outbreak.

He has insisted that Prince Harry, 35, Meghan (seen this month in London) and 10-month-old Archie should return from their rumoured Malibu abode, to support the Queen and the rest of the royal family, who are currently in self isolation

Telling them to ‘be careful’ and that ‘he loved them’, he argued that Prince Harry had ‘made a mistake’ by recently being tricked into talking to Russian pranksters, and likened it to him ‘mistakenly’ selling pictures to the paparazi.

He concluded that ‘everyone has made mistakes’ and  ‘it’s time for Archie to say hello to grandpa’.

Meghan has had to endure regular public outbursts from her half sister Samantha Markle, and her father Thomas.

Meghan has maintained a dignified silence amid an array of public outbursts by both Samantha and her father.

Last February it emerged the Duchess had reached out to her estranged father shortly after her wedding in May 2018.

The Queen (seen last month) is currently in self isolation amid the pandemic, after Prince Charles was diagnosed with coronavirus

The Duchess had said she was devastated by her her father’s Thomas Markle’s public attacks on her and begged him to patch up their differences privately.

At the beginning of the month Prince Harry was duped into discussing a fictional island, smoking cannabis, and transporting penguins to the North Pole by Russian pranksters.

Posing as Greta Thunberg and her father Svante, they fooled Harry into thinking that mining companies close to President Trump were exploiting ‘Chunga-Chunga’ – the name of a Russian children’s song about a fictional island in the tropics.

Kuznetsov and Stolyarov, who have also pranked Sir Elton John and Tayyip Erdogan, also poked fun at the Duke smoking ‘weed’ on the fake Greta’s eco-catamaran

Harry and Meghan have reportedly left Canada for LA and are believed to want to rent a place similar to what they potentially could live in long term – and they’re eyeing up a Malibu mansion

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex could be planning to stay at this sprawling Malibu mansion called Petra Manor to test out life in southern California

Prince Harry is believed to have been tricked into conversation with Kuznetsov and Stolyarov on New Year’s Eve and January 22 on Vancouver Island.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have reportedly left Canada for good to set up a permanent home in Los Angeles – and it’s likely affluent Malibu is top of their list.

Last week a royal insider claimed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to leave Vancouver Island – where they have been staying since announcing they were stepping down as senior royals in January – amid fears the US-Canada border could close due to coronavirus.

The Sussexes want to be close to Meghan’s friends and mother Doria, the source told The Sun. They are now believed to be in lockdown in the Hollywood area with ten-month-old baby Archie.

The movie was a huge hit, and a big screen franchise was born. Now, go back to where it all began with one of the co-creators of this legendary comic series that spun off into TV shows, movies, books, toys, video games, food and just about anything else you can imagine.

The #WatchTMNTWithMe event sounds pretty exciting. Kevin Eastman has some interesting things planned throughout the rest of 2020 to celebrate the movie, the first of three in a trilogy. He recently shined the spotlight on Mark Martin’s 1990 parody book Green-Grey Sponge-Suit Sushi Turtles. He is showing off art from the book on his homepage.

You can check out the art at Kevin Eastman Studios. Last week, Kevin Eastman sent out an inspiring letter to finds in this time of turmoil. He had this to say.

So, hurry to the local store and pick up some frozen pizza if you can find some, hurry back, hunker down, and enjoy the classic original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It’s going to be a pizza party.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have returned home to the United States after testing positive for COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, in Australia.

The “Cast Away” actor took to his Twitter account to announce the good news after he and Wilson spent more than two weeks in Queensland self-isolating.

“Hey, Folks…We’re home now and, like the rest of America, we carry on with sheltering in place and social distancing. Many, many thanks to everyone in Australia who looked after us. Their care and guidance made possible our return to the USA. And many thanks to all of you who reached out with well wishes. Rita and I so appreciate it. Hanx,” the actor tweeted.

Hanks and Wilson, both 63, kept their fans updated throughout their quarantine process since first revealing their positive diagnosis on March 11.

“Hello, folks. Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive,” the 63-year-old actor first revealed in a statement on Twitter.

He continued, “Well, now. What to do next?  The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks’ will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no? We’ll keep the world posted and updated. Take care of yourselves!”

The couple reportedly stayed in a hospital in Queensland for five days before being released. Hanks was in Australia filming an untitled Elvis Presley biopic directed by Baz Luhrmann when he and Wilson learned they contracted the coronavirus.

The film has since halted production.

One week following the couple’s diagnosis, Hanks took to his social media to update fans on their symptoms.

“Hey folks. Good News: One week after testing Positive, in self-isolation, the symptoms are much the same. No fever but the blahs,” Hanks revealed. “Folding the laundry and doing the dishes leads to a nap on the couch.”

Hanks then told fans that Wilson had beat him in six straight hands of gin rummy.

“But I have learned not to spread my Vegemite so thick,” he said referencing fans’ reactions to a previous post showing his generous helping of Vegemite on toast.

“I traveled here with a typewriter, one I used to love. We are all in this together. Flatten the curve,” Hanks concluded the post, which showed the typewriter he referenced.

The couple’s son, Chet Hanks, also kept fans updated through the process, taking to his social media after the Hollywood stars left the hospital to assure fans they were “feeling a lot better.”

Wilson turned to music during her time in isolation, prompting the creation of a playlist she shared on Spotify that she named “Quarantunes” following a survey she conducted with fans on her Instagram account.

Other celebrities who have since confirmed they tested positive for COVID-19 include Idris Elba, Debi Mazar and Daniel Dae Kim, among others.

“Your makeup is terrible and horrifying” – Nigerians blast Tacha over excessive makeup in new video

Big Brother Naija reality TV star and Instagram sensation, Tacha has faced heavy backlash – which she’s become accustomed to – after she shared a video on her Instagram page recently.

The Instagram sensation took to her account to call out president Buhari for addressing Nigerians only on his social media platform, Twitter.

She also talked about the proposed lock down over the coronavirus disease slowly ravaging Nigeria

She’s of the opinion that the total lock down won’t make sense as Nigerians will find it difficult to feed themselves.

Some fans however were more concerned with her makeup instead of the message she was passing across as they deemed it excessive and horrifying.

Davido made the announcement yesterday that his fiancee, Chioma tested positive for the deadly coronavirus and that he has completely gone into self-isolation. #OscarsSoWhite: Asian Leads – Yow Yow!

During the award show circuit this year, there were constant conversations about how the Oscars continue to be so white. Two pieces of criticism involved both “The Farewell” and “Parasite.” Awkwafina and Lulu Wang didn’t deserve to be snubbed for their work in “The Farewell.” For Parasite, why could they only be recognized for Best Picture, Director or Ensemble and not for the work that the individual actors and actresses did in this film? It was a mystery.

Be Kind Rewind is a YouTube channel that focuses on Hollywood history. In this particular episode, they explore why Asian actors and actresses continue to struggle in 2020 with recognition, but that there has been a long history of it prior. In order for us to change and move forward, we have to understand how it started.

Awards Season Is Going to Look Very Different This Year

Social distancing just caught up to awards season. Out of mounting COVID-19 concerns that have fundamentally disrupted every aspect of the entertainment industry supply chain, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced on Friday sweeping changes to its eligibility rules for the 2021 Golden Globe Awards.

The new normal: temporary suspension of the mandate that a film must screen for HFPA members at a third-party venue (i.e., some kind of theater) in Los Angeles (for a minimum of seven days) in order to qualify for a statuette run. Where the HFPA’s body of 90 international movie journalists has long been accustomed to studio-sponsored private showings of would-be Globe contenders, home viewings of DVD screeners and streaming links will now suffice. Moreover, instead of giving consideration only to movies released in theaters (or via pay-per-view cable or video on demand) before December 31, 2020, the new guidelines open the floor to movies with a planned theatrical release in Los Angeles during that time. The change will tentatively be in effect from March 15 until April 30 — an unusual display of empathy at a time when theaters and screening rooms across the country remain shuttered.

The HFPA’s relaxation of viewing rules arrives just a week removed from the Cannes Film Festival’s postponement from May to early July in response to the coronavirus outbreak — and even more crucially, less than six months ahead of top-tier awards movie incubators such as the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals, which are almost certain to see their operations impacted or curtailed by international curve-flattening initiatives. (On Friday, TIFF became the first major festival to move online, launching a stay-at-home cinema program featuring streaming movies and proprietary Q&As.) Also on Friday, the Television Academy announced it will be adjusting the voting deadlines and eligibility rules for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards.

Bowing to concerns by network and streaming executives, TV publicists, and awards campaigners, Television Academy leadership shifted the Emmy entry deadline by four weeks to June 5 (from May 11) and moved its so-called “phase one” voting period to July 2–13 (from its original June 15–29 window). While the Primetime Emmys are still set for broadcast September 20, all For Your Consideration events “whether with a live audience, streaming, or recorded on a viewing platform” have been suspended for the duration of this year’s Emmy season, the academy said.

Although these new measures are intended as real-time responses to a rapidly unfolding, industrywide emergency with no clear timeframe or resolution, their early implementation reflects a belief that the awards-season economy will go back to normal at some point in the near future — specifically, during a summer increasingly devoid of blockbusters — even if that assumption seems more in line with Hollywood–brand magical thinking than any empirical scientific data.

Meanwhile, the fate of the Oscars remains an open-ended proposition. For now, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has given no indication that coronavirus precautions will compel a similar upheaval of time-cherished release and screening rules (with the 93rd annual Oscars scheduled to take place February 28, 2021). For films aimed at Academy Award contention, the organization’s minimum requirement of a seven-day theatrical release at a Los Angeles–area theater remains in place. And according to awards strategists and academy members informally canvassed by Vulture, it is simply too early in the process to predict how COVID-19 may infect entertainment’s most glittering event.

But in a statement earlier this week, the Academy announced that it “is in the process of evaluating all aspects of this uncertain landscape and what changes may need to be made. We are committed to being nimble and forward-thinking as we discuss what is best for the future of the industry and will make further announcements in the coming days.”
